How do you talk while doing magic

August 15th, 2008 2 Comments   Posted in Step 3 - Learn magic

What To Say When Performing Magic?

This often causes problems for people. Well, there is a very easy answer to that, you just tell a lie. You come up with a believable lie and the words come by themselves.

Use your imagination and have fun. Find your lie. You’ve got it when it is chuckling in your stomach and you

look forward to telling it.It has to be a believable lie and you have to have fun with it. The lie has to make you chuckle. You can make people believe in anything. Do it with a twinkle in your eye or be deadly serious.

the most annoying thing is sometimes, when people start performing, they think they must speak with a theatre-voice. Your way of speaking should not sound like you were reading something out loud. You are not a parrot. Speak with your natural voice. Speak like you always speak, -the way you talk to your friends. Remember spectators are your friends. So Talk with your own voice

Remember you don’t have to learn a whole speech word by word. It is always a good idea to write everything down. But when you perform, it is much better to use your speech as a set-off and then improvise.

Don’t be scared of the word improvise. It is just like in everyday life. When talking to your friends or relatives you improvise new words and sentences all the time. If you didn’t you would be a robot. The difference between speaking to friends and an audience is not that big.

Daniel Chesterfield: Magic with style and attitude

His name is Daniel Chesterfield and he is a Belgian magic imitator and imitates no-one but the legendary David Copperfield. That, he does really well and almost really evil. Big gesticulation and big self appreciation and very ordinary everyday structure. One could think it reminds one a lot of some of David Copper field’s super illusions. The difference, and the funny thing about it, is that we all know “The rolling stairs” or “The self-opening doors”

And try to notice the next time you stand before an elevator door, I’m completely sure you’ll be making magic moves à la Chesterfield.

Misdirection

Learn the secret weapon of magic. It’s much easier than you think!

Nearly all magic tricks have a weak spot. That is the moment where you do your secret something. That’s the moment the spectator must not know about.

You have to understand that misdirection is the number-one technique magicians are using for directing peoples’ attention away from what-we-do-not-want -them-to-notice.

Basically you want to direct the spectators’ attention elsewhere – without it being too obvious. That is why you have to act naturally. And be yourself while doing magic.

First you have to locate and find the weak part of the trick and then apply some kind of misdirection to the presentation. This way you get the best out of any magic trick.
The 5 basic principles of misdirection :

You can apply these five principles immediately.

1. The eyes follow movements

wherever you look – the spectators look. So get good rapport with them and remember to look them in the eyes. Direct their eyes away from the secret moves.

2. Ask them questions
Ask them about something: “What was your name?” or like “Remember your card?” Then they will look you in the eyes. When they look you in the eyes - that is the moment.

3. Hide one movement with another
Try a bigger movement to create their attention. Use it to cover a smaller movement. The two movements stop at the same time.

It could be: You ask the spectator “Hand me a pair of scissors”. Stretch your right arm. At the same time your left hand is preparing a setup with the rope. The motion in the left hand is the smaller movement.

4. Keep them occupied
Make them do something away from the spot you need to cover up. “Here, take that pen and put your signature on this card.” While they write their signature - that is the moment. You do the secret things with the rest of the deck.

5. Make them laugh
Do something funny that makes them laugh. At the moment they are laughing - you do your thing. When they laugh their attention and awareness is low. And you can make any secret move without any problem.

And now take a look at the master of misdirection

Tips for learning magic tricks faster

Some magic tricks are so complicated that it is hard to know what the effect is and what is leading to the effect.

Not to mention that often is the explanation difficult to understand. So here is some tips for learning magic tricks faster..

First you have to get an overview of the trick.

The idea is to get a clear image of the whole trick - before you start learning it. Get the movie inside your head even if it is a written explanation. Some written explanations are very difficult to understand. Read the whole explanation and try to understand what the effect looks like in the eyes of a spectator.

Often the problems come with new moves you have to learn. It is easy to get lost. So try to understand the purpose of the move. Ask you self this: What does it want to achieve?

It is much easier to follow instructions when you know the purpose of it. For example a “double undercut” gets a card from the middle of a deck to The top.

Magic instructions are often how to get from point A to Point B

So learn and know your A’s and B’s.

And then put it all together and start practising the whole pattern from start to finish. To learn a magic trick takes time and practice. That goes for even the easiest magic tricks.

You want to know how it looks from the spectator’s point of view. At the same time you want to be sure the spectators never notice the secret of the trick.

Practice thoroughly until you do the technical pattern flawlessly by heart. It should feel easy to do. Naturally you have to remember everything. So run through the pattern again and again.

Look in the mirror or even better the video camera and see how your magic looks. When you surprise yourself - you got it!
